It is a rural and very traditional region, the 'Austrian Lake District', beautiful whatever the season or weather. In the winter it is a winter sports haven and in the summer offers everything if you like the outdoors; particularly renowned for walking, cycling and mountain biking, but also popular for kayaking, climbing and fly fishing.

There are a number of ski areas around, the nearest and biggest being the Dachstein West, www.dachstein.at .The Krippenstein, www.krippenstein.at offers free riding/off piste. Both these are easily accessible by free ski bus (100 metres from Haus Bergheim). There is plenty of opportunity for other winter activities e.g. ski touring, langlauf, snow shoeing, tobogganing, sleigh rides, etc.
There are a host of walking/cycling opportunities and plenty of sightseeing attractions. www.salzkammergut.at is the local tourism web-site.

The village shops are a 10 minute walk where you will find the local Baker, Butcher and a small supermarket. There are also three local bars/restaurants, ‘Steegwirt’, ‘Hotel Post’ and ‘Fleischauerei’ offering fresh local produce, local beer, schnapps and of course delicious cakes/desserts.
